WE GET TAXED WHILE PHONE COMPANIES PROFIT

The government is going to introduce a 50p a month tax to reportedly pay for the Internet speeds to be improved across the UK.
Doesn't sound much does it? But add it up? 12 times 50p equals £6 a year. Times that £6 by the number of customers, roughly 20 million makes 120 million pounds. Once the tax is introduced it will like all taxes simply rise, until it is making Billions for the government. The same way I guess the lottery was going to help good causes and then turned into the only investment charities got, as the government pulled out giving them money and left it to the national lottery to give money out.

So why should we the British Tax payer, pay for the Internet system to be upgraded? How come BT or any other telecommunications company aren't footing the bill?

Is it because of this?

The global services division is a supplier to the Government's controversial £12.7 billion plan to computerise all patient medical records.

The project, which aims to link 30,000 GPs to nearly 300 hospitals, is already four years late.

It was originally estimated at £2.3 billion. The Government is thought to be overhauling the plan, allowing some hospitals to seek other suppliers.

BT has also admitted that it has won some contracts by effectively offering services too cheaply, overestimating the profitability of the deals.

So the government got BT to invest in another wasted computer scheme, and then allow hospitals to seek other suppliers. I am guessing these others suppliers will not be from the UK either.

The BT retail arm, which provides phone services to homes, rose 9 per cent to £316 million, the wholesale arm, renting its lines to other telecoms providers, grew profits 18 per cent and its Openreach business, which rents out exchanges to other broadband operators, grew profits 7 per cent to £344 million.

So BT continues to make a very good profit out of you and me. So is the government taxing us all so that they can repay BT for their own cock up? As all the infrastructure is owned by BT, so it really should be them paying for the new equipment to make the internet better.

All other communications companies are paying for the infrastructure such as Virgin laying cables and mobile phone companies installing equipment into exchanges and building their own servers. So why should we bank roll BT?

Wasn't this the company in the 80's and 90's which boasted of making £100 a minute profits. Where did all that money go?
