PARISH COUNCIL BY ELECTION LONDON COLNEY NORTH WEST WARD

Candidates:

LAB (Maria Aguado)
LD (Vibs Nazeri)
BNP (Danny Seabrook)
CON (David Winstone)

No previous results to be found, but the seat is labour.

Plans to build an Islamic Centre in London Colney, which attracted more than a hundred objections, may dominate the outcome.

The proposal had been turned down by St Albans council planning officers due to the mosque having "a far bigger usage than" estimates "stated in the application" and that "the site was in a conservation area and such a large establishment would be out of keeping".

Now an almost identical application has just been approved in the village by St Albans council planning committee on the chairman, Geoff Harrison, casting vote, "prompting tears of joy from some members of the the Muslim community". While members of the Bangladeshi community celebrated their victory, "tempers flared among the hoards of residents who turned out in force to hear the committee vote on the application". Police officers were "on hand to oversee the heated meeting".
