List of current candidates
Clive Jefferson (BNP)
sitting MP Jamie Reed (Labour)
Chris Whiteside (Conservatives)
Frank Hollowell (Lib-Dems)
Jill Perry (Green Party)
Now make no bones this area has been Labour for 75 years and the seat of Copeland was created in 1983 and belonged to Jack Cunningham until his retirement in 2005. A little tinkering from the boundary commission has brought in 4 wards which used to be in the Workington seat.
2005 GENERAL ELECTION RESULT
Labour Jamie Reed 17,033 50.5 -1.3
Conservative Chris Whiteside 10,713 31.7 -5.8
Liberal Democrat Frank Hollowell 3,880 11.5 +0.8
UKIP Edward Caley-Knowles 735 2.2
Independent Brian Earley 734 2.2
English Democrats Alan Mossop 662 2.0
Majority 6,320 18.7
Turnout 33,757 62.3 -2.6
In 2009 the BNP had candidate in every single ward of the Copeland council and got 3,250 votes In Clive Jeffersons own election ward he got 29% of the vote So even though this is going to be the first showing for the BNP in Cumbria it could be a successful one.
Lets not forget that the North West returned Nick Griffin as their MEP could the North West be the first region to return a BNP MP. They have a solid base to work on and a declining Labour party This is 167 on the Tory target of seats, But I am expecting some surprises on election night and don;t be surprised if Copeland is not one of them.
