St Helens Ward, Barnsley By election

Dave Leech, Labour Party: 1,257, 75.1%
Danny Cooke, BNP: 174, 10.5%
Kevin Riddiough, English Democrats: 146, 8.8%
Clive Watkinson, Conservatives: 61, 3.7%
Edward Alan Gouthwaite, Ind: 21, 1.3%

2nd place looks good, but the figures tell a different story. 10.5% in a ward where in 2008 the party polled in excess of 30% shows how the party have slipped. Yes, in 2008 there was a very unpopular Tony Blair running the country, but since then you've had a Barnsley Labour MP convicted of fiddling expenses. The English Democrats picked up a respectable result for their first time standing in the ward.

Just look at the three rivers result from the 24th Sept, Labour find their best result ever when they are at their lowest point in the polls, in three rivers they found 200 people from no where in Barnsley they find 500.
