Here is the result from the Lower Stoke ward by-election in Coventry held on the 6th October
Catherine Miks (Lab) 1,366 54.1%
Jaswant Singh Birdi (Con) 563 22.3%
Robert McArdle (Soc Alt) 254 10.1%
Keith Oxford (BNP) 149 5.9%
Laura Vesty (Green) 114 4.5%
Mark Widdop (Lib Dem) 79 3.1%
The BNP vote was comparable in percentage terms to when this seat was contested earlier this year, however, the Socialist Alternative vote increased by nearly 4% while the Green vote dropped by 3.3%. With a so-called right wing government it can only be expected that people will vote for parties towards the left. It is of no surprise that the Socialist candidate got a relatively good result in Coventry as they are well established and have had councillors elected in the past, such as former Labour MP, Dave Nellist.
